The Further Education Sector has had another excellent year at the 2009 Green Gown Awards, taking home three winner and four highly commended prizes.
The Green Gown Awards, now in their 5th year, recognise exceptional initiatives being taken by institutions across the UK to become more sustainable. With sustainability moving up the agenda, they are a prestigious recognition of the achievements within the further and higher education sector, as well as the environmental sector.
At this year’s awards, announced at the first ever Green Gown Awards gala banquet evening, on 23rd June at Imperial College London, Leicester College triumphed in the Carbon Reduction category, and Warwickshire College beat stiff competition to win the Colleges and Smaller Institutions award.
Warwickshire College also scooped the prestigious BIS (Department for Business Innovation and Skills) Award for Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability in an English College or University. The judges chose Warwickshire College out of all other universities and colleges from England that had applied to the 2009 Awards. They felt the College had gone on a comprehensive and strategic journey, raising the bar and lighting a new and sustainable path for the whole sector.
EAUC Executive Director Iain Patton said: “We are thrilled by the number of applications to the 2009 Green Gown Awards from the FE sector. The quality of this year’s entrants has been excellent and made the judges task really difficult. The Awards have highlighted just some of the outstanding sustainability work that is taking part in the sector.
“Warwickshire College is a very worthy winner of the BIS Award and provides and excellent example to other FE institutions of the achievements that can be made when staff and students become engaged in sustainability.”
