Building Services

building icon Why you are important

Sustainable Development is about ensuring that development "meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." (Brundtland, 1987). Further Education can play an important role and you are a big part of that. See Why is Sustainable Development Important? for more.

You in Building Services have control over how your provider's estate is managed. You can reduce carbon emissions by managing your energy more efficiently; by specifying more sustainable buildings; purchasing more carbon-efficient products; and implementing a sustainable travel plan.

Furthermore, you are in charge of your provider's water use and waste disposal, which can both have huge impacts on the environment.

You are responsible for your provider's grounds and surroundings; which provides a great opportunity to increase biodiversity and help staff and students connect with nature.

You may also be responsible for allocation of rooms, which holds significant potential for you to interact with the local community.
