The Sustainable Construction Topic Support Network will be hosting a workshop on the RICS SKA HE Rating for sustainable fit-outs and refurbishments as part of their next meeting, which is free and open to all.

The event is part of the RICS SKA rating team national roadshow, raising awareness of the scheme and the opportunities available to universities and other further education institutions to actively green their estates, one interior fit-out or refurbishment at a time.

Talks will range from identifying strategic use of the scheme, to detailed explanation of how to use the scheme. There will also be a section on understanding impacts to the delivery process and team engagement. Some discussion around other benchmarking schemes available (BREEAM and LEED) will also take place to support and place the SKA rating scheme within audience experience to date.

The event will start at 11am with introductions and a discussion session about the development of the Sustainable Construction TSN. Lunch will be available from 12.30pm, with the SKA HE session beginning at 1pm. A detailed programme and speakers for the afternoon session will be announced soon.

More about the SKA HE Rating

SKA rating for Higher Education (SKA HE) is the latest environmental assessment tool for the higher and further education sector. SKA HE has been designed by the industry for the industry to meet the requirements of higher and further education interior fit-outs and refurbishments to meet clear sustainable good practice.

SKA HE is based on SKA rating methodology and is evolved to reflect the specific requirements of Higher Education estates including lecture theatres, laboratories, and other specialist educational uses.

The scheme is supported by the Association of University Directors of Estates, University College London (UCL), Rider Levett Bucknall, Grigoriou Interiors, Overbury and AECOM, in addition to the SKA Technical Committee and a wider industry research team.

"UCL has adopted RICS SKA to promote good practice in sustainability across its portfolio of projects. As a result, we have delivered significant savings as well as ensuring that the university is acting responsibly. We have also supported the upskilling of UCL project staff, enabling them to get a better understanding of our sustainability goals."
Richard Jackson, Director of Sustainability, University College London
