S-Lab - The Effective Laboratory: Scotland

A one day S-Lab conference is being held at the new University of Strathclyde Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC) on March 1st in Glasgow. It will have one keynote on the TIC design - and key issues in achieving both HE/industry and cross-disciplinary collaboration - by the University and the architects, BDP; and a second by Kathy Ramirez Aguilar of the University of Colorado, Boulder (see below). 6-8 parallel streams, with 30-40 sessions, will then cover topics such as:
•An in-depth examination of the new TIC and key issues in designing for HE/industry and cross-disciplinary collaboration
•New and Refurbished Laboratories - many case studies, including the S-Lab Award Winning Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine building at the University of Edinburgh (tbc), the Medicinal Chemistry refurbishment at the University of Glasgow, the unique Ultra-Low Vibration at the University of St Andrews, and the Centre for Experimental Medicine at Queen’s Belfast
•Laboratory Improvement - master class on tools and techniques
•BIM and Laboratories
•Effective Briefing in Laboratory Projects
•Laboratory Health and Safety: Key Issues
•Demand Responsive Ventilation in Laboratories
•Good Practice in Laboratory Procurement
•What Does Laboratory Space and Operation Really Cost?
•Cold Storage Good Practice: case studies from the Universities of Aberdeen, Colorado and Edinburgh, and thematic sessions on inventory management and more
•Laboratory Ventilation - multiple sessions on standards, controls/BMS integration and more
•Cost-Effective Measures to Reduce Laboratory Energy Use
•Laboratory Assessment: Helping Science and Reducing Energy and Cost with the S Lab/Green Impact Framework - sessions on Edinburgh and Strathclyde experience
•Science Council Registration for Scientists and Technical Staff: multiple sessions
•Personal Development for Technical Staff: Challenges and Solutions
•Strategic Approaches to Technical Staff Career Structures and Progression

The combination of diverse content, and excellent networking, makes this a 'must attend' event for all laboratory stakeholders in Scotland, and there will also be much specialist content of interest to English audiences. Early bird tickets are only £10 (less than the cost of catering) for HE/not-for-profit staff.
