Facilitation by the International Futures Forum

This transdisciplinary symposium is a two-day postgraduate facilitated conference for Masters, PhD and early career researchers, organised through the Centre for Environmental Change and Human Resilience (CECHR) at the University of Dundee and the James Hutton Institute.

This symposium aims to equip new researchers across disciplines from the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, with the intellectual tackle to meet the wicked problems of massive environmental change using interdisciplinary perspectives. Formidable problems confronting humanity, such as climatic variability hazards, resource depletion, or food poverty are highly complex and cannot be effectively addressed by one discipline or method alone. Today’s early career researchers faced with the challenge of addressing these problems stand to greatly benefit from learning how to develop interdisciplinary thinking, and learn skills in designing the kinds of collaborations that are so vital to addressing these complex problems.

We are keen for all postgraduate attendees to showcase their work through this event and encourage all to take part in the Turbo Talk session (5 minute presentation each). This will prove a useful exercise in making connections and learning how to appreciate different disciplinary perspectives.

In addition to presentations showcasing participant’s research, this exciting event features inspiring keynote speakers and interactive workshops from the fascinating and thought-provoking International Futures Forum (IFF). The IFF group was founded on the fact that we don’t understand today’s complex world. These events will directly engage researchers in sciences, social sciences and humanities in tackling research problems from interdisciplinary perspectives. Participants will come away with highly applicable new skills in envisioning, design, and implementing problem-focussed interdisciplinary research.
