You are invited to be inspired by two leaders in community empowerment from the internationally acclaimed Highlander Center in Appalachia, Tennessee, alma mater of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks.

Pam McMichael and Elandria Williams from Highlander will lead an action learning event covering:
• Where can we find the inspiration and enthusiasm that we all need to work together in the long term for communities that are socially, culturally, economically and environmentally sustainable?
• How can we all work together as equals, not simply to reshape public services, but to transform our communities?  What skills and resources do people need to be more effective agents for change within their own communities and how can they get them?
• Do public organisations have the skills and knowledge they need to work differently with local people?
• How can change programmes like Health & Social Care Integration and Community Empowerment help move Scotland closer to delivering the sort of transformation proposed in the Christie Report?

These questions will be discussed in round table action learning sets organised by the Fred Edwards Trust with the support of the Scottish Community Development Center, PKAVS and Perth & Kinross Council.

PLUS EVENING LECTURE

Highlander’s Director Pam McMichael will make connections between the issues facing communities in Tennessee, Scotland and globally for the Fred Edwards Trust Lecture to be held at 6.30pm at the University of Edinburgh.

Chaired by Trust chairman, Sandy Cameron with commentary from Kevin Dunion, ex-Director of Friends of the Earth Scotland and author of ‘Troublemakers: The struggle for environmental justice in Scotland’.

Gain insight into community organising from an internationally recognised leader in the field.  Come along to be informed and inspired and to get the chance to meet with like-minded people at the post-lecture drinks reception.

The 2014 Lecture and drinks reception have been sponsored by Scotmid Co-operative and supported by the University of Edinburgh.  The Fred Edwards Trust is grateful to both for their support.

The Lecture is free but we invite a donation to support the Fred Edwards Trust Fellowship, for two Scottish-based community activists to travel to Highlander in May 2015 to take part in a series of workshops, training and visits as part of our overall work to promote active citizenship in Scotland.
