On 2 May the Scottish Government released their latest publication ‘The Energy Efficient Scotland: Route Map’. The 20-year plan outlines the vision of Scotland being energy efficient and ‘by 2040 our homes and buildings being warmer, greener and more efficient’. The Route Map has two strands; firstly dealing with fuel poverty and energy inefficiency in domestic buildings; secondly for increasing the energy efficiency in non-domestic building. This means tackling the 20 000 building within the public sector, through which the Scottish Government plans a phased implementation of energy standards, reviewing and building on the current regulations.

It is recognised that the public sector are already addressing this issue with projects to make their buildings more energy efficient, and the Route Map looks to support and improve on these current actions. A target of 59% emissions reduction in non-domestic buildings is needed (on of the 2015 baseline) for Scotland to reach its carbon reduction targets as outlined in the Climate Change Plan, and the new Climate Change Bill which is planned for release later in 2018. Further consultation is planned in 2019 for the framework of standards through which the Scottish Government intend to implement the Route Map, with new legislation planned for 2021.

The release of the Route Map is being supported with a period of consultation for stakeholders to comment on the feasibility and delivery mechanisms for the implementation of the framework of standards. EAUC-Scotland will be attending one of three consultation events happening around Scotland (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen).

The consultation will close 27 July 2018.

Please get in touch with the Scotland Office if you would like more information on these events. If you have comments for the consultation please let us know, as all input would be valuable.
