Dr Victoria Hands, Director, Sustainability Hub – Kingston University London emailed the Transport Community of Practice to ask:

“I wonder if you can tell me which universities run their own bus service please?”

Please view all responses below:

Hi Victoria,

We have a bus contract with First Kernow and subsidise our buses with the car parking monies. We also provide the Mussel card which gives access to all buses in Cornwall, ferries and some train journeys. The scheme is very successful but I have to say we have a really good partnership with First Kernow which is essential!
I have attached our Green Travel Strategy for more information.
Hope this helps a little.

Hi Victoria,

We do (insofar as we have a contractual partnership with a local operator). The network (Uni-link) has operated for over 15 years and has been really well used. Service info available here, and please feel free to contact me if you’d like any details: http://www.unilinkbus.co.uk/
Kind regards,

Adam Tewkesbury, Transport Manager, University of Southampton

Morning Victoria

We have had the Met Rider for nearly 20 years at Cardiff Metropolitan University. It’s a dedicated bus service that is run between campuses, student halls, landlord areas and supermarkets Monday to Friday during term time. Students purchase a pass that is valid on not just the Met Rider but also all Cardiff Bus services for the sum of £270 valid 1st Sept – 30th June (works out as £6 a week for unlimited access).  The service is run by Cardiff Bus in collaboration with Cardiff Met whereby we subsidise the passes to keep them affordable.

Staff are able to access the Met Rider service for free between the hours of 9am and 4pm to travel between campuses by showing their staff ID cards.

I would be interested in the findings you receive from other universities. If you do collate their comments could you forward it to me please?
Kind Regards

Neil Woollacott, Deputy Accommodation Services Manager / Travel Plan Manager, Cardiff Metropolitan University

Victoria

We have been in partnership with Stagecoach for a good number of years to provide a service between campuses as well as access to scheduled services in the county. Staff and students have access to the services at a reduced fare.

Like most colleagues , I would  like to see the compiled responses

Thanks

Dear Victoria

The University currently operates two private shuttle buses:
Since July 2016 the Science Transit Shuttle, which commenced in response to the wholly inadequate public transport between two key campuses.  This is contracted out to UNO Bus Ltd.

The Begbroke Shuttle, connecting the Science Area in Oxford with Begbroke Science Park.  This is operated in-house by the Science Park.
