The end of the United Nations Decade for Education in Sustainable Development (UNDESD) was marked in Scotland on Wednesday 29 October. Rebecca and I represented EAUC-Scotland at the celebrations held at the Scottish Government offices in Edinburgh, organised by Learning for Sustainability Scotland.
The day started with a talk from Simon Pepper OBE (Cabinet Sub-Committee on Sustainable Scotland) on the history of ESD in Scotland and how the UNDESD came at the perfect time for Scottish education. From there the day was split in two; the morning session identifying the successes of the decade in Scotland and the afternoon workshop sessions looking at the future and how ESD will be continued.
It was agreed that one of the lasting successes from the decade included the increased recognition for sustainable education on multiple levels from government and transnational organisations to the tertiary institutions broadening the scope from estates to curriculum. Looking forward it was discussed that Scotland should share its ideas and experiences and continue to engage with all levels of organisations.
The day was rounded off with MSP Humza Yousaf participating in a questions and answer session with some of the representatives from the primary to secondary schools.
Although the UN DESD is over, we look forward to continued improvement in ESD over the next decade and beyond!
