‘Activist Learning’: supporting student learning through sustainability action
This session will explore ways for staff to provide support for students to undertake sustainability activitism on campus. Such staff-student projects can generate tensions, including the need for negotiations around expectations, responsibilities and boundaries. This session draws on experiences of ongoing sustainability projects at Keele University, providing an opportunity to share best practice with other institutions to drive genuine cultural change in sustainability practices in the higher and further education sector.
Meanwhile, Leicester College has been working with a group of part time trainee teachers who are not sustainability experts or advocates. The group are studying for a Diploma to teach in the post 16 sector. The learners have designed and tested a programme of activities and lessons that embed ESD into the formal FE curriculum. The programme is part of their assessed work and provides the learners, the college and the wider sector with a valuable insight into embedding ESD into the curriculum.
