First International Meeting on Implementation of Education for Sustainable Development for Higher Education Institutes (IMESD) took place in Amsterdam 8-9 February 2007.

Stephen Sterling and William Scott were commissioned by DHO, the Dutch network for sustainable higher education, to develop a report on Education for Sustainable Development in Higher Education in England in preparation for an international meeting of academics and ministerial representatives in Amsterdam in early February, under the auspices of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), and its strategy on ESD. One of the purposes of the meeting was to 'bridge the gap between policy makers and higher education institutes'.

The report was drafted in consultation with Ann Finlayson, Education Commissioner, UK Sustainable Development Commission, David Foxley, Manager, Engineering Design Education, UK Royal Academy of Engineering, and Joanna Simpson, Policy Adviser, Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). It was discussed in Amsterdam along with others from the Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium (Flanders), Spain and Germany.
