Environmental Management Systems
An Environmental Management System is a tool for managing an organisation's impact on the environment. It provides a structured approach to planning and implementing environmental protection measures. It also establishes a framework for tracking, evaluating and communicating environmental performance. An EMS helps ensure that major environmental risks and liabilities are identified, minimised and managed. Universities and colleges are increasingly implementing EMS’s. A recent EAUC sector survey identified that 57% of respondents claimed that they were in the process of developing an EMS (EcoCampus/EAUC EMS Survey - December 2006).
