The EcoCampus scheme is now entering its 6th year and would like to welcome yet another group of universities to this year’s cohort. These include Southampton Solent University, Coventry University, Middlesex University, the University of Brighton, Liverpool John Moores University, the University of Westminster, the Newcastle College Group, Thames Valley University, Imperial College and the University of Cambridge.

Other institutions have also been progressing well in the scheme. The University of Worcester has seen a significant improvement in waste management, whilst student and staff engagement has also seen remarkable improvements since enrolling on the scheme back in 2006. This was reflected earlier on in the year when they achieved the Platinum Award.

Elsewhere, Aston University are working towards the gold award and have implemented a number of initiatives to improve their environmental performance. This includes a rocket composter, which they hope will enable them to meet their target of a 10% annual reduction in waste to landfill. Eventually, when combined with a waste disposal unit and a dewatered for food waste, the composter could take up to 5250 litres of food waste a week, potentially saving 3075 tonnes of CO2 annually.
