EAUC-S Conference 2018 Morning Sessions

City of Glasgow College Sustainability Tour

The City of Glasgow College City Campus opened in 2016, and has been meticulously designed to offer superb opportunities to students and to meet and adapt to the changing needs of future generations. This future-proofing includes technologically advanced, industry standard facilities which complement a vast open and inspiring learning and teaching environment. The campus is one of the largest specialist college buildings in Europe. The tour showed delegates the scale of the campus and its sustainability initiatives such as their solar thermal system, rain water harvesting, roof gardens (3 in fact) and internal cycle storage.

Business Case Guide – EAUC / University of Edinburgh

University of Edinburgh provided details of a new guide for sustainability leaders and other change makers who want to get sustainability on the radar of their executive teams and drive change by demonstrating the business benefits for their institution. The discussion covered the value sustainability brings to agendas such as student experience and societal impact, and explored how these benefits can be leveraged to successfully bring about change at a strategic level. The session was informed by the on-going development of a Business Case Guide, which is being undertaken by University of Edinburgh on behalf of EAUC.

Sustainability Leadership Scorecard - EAUC and University of St Andrews

The Sustainability Leadership Scorecard (SLS) is a free planning and self-assessment tool specifically for colleges and universities to improve social responsibility and environmental performance through a whole institution approach. The Sustainability Leadership Scorecard systematically guides you through the design, planning and delivery of your strategic sustainability activities.

The session gave an insight into the Scorecard from both the EAUC and an institution already using it. Delegates learnt about the various dynamic functions and facilities that help institutions to lead and monitor their sustainability journeys.

SDG Accord - EAUC

A year has passed since the launch of the International SDG Accord, and it continues to go from strength to strength. The SDG Accord report was recently presented to the annual UN High Level Political Forum by the EAUC, and it has now become a formal tool of the UN’s Higher Education Sustainability Initiative. The Accord exists to inspire, celebrate and advance the critical role that education has in delivering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Accord is also a commitment learning institutions are making to one another to do more to deliver the goals, to annually report on each signatory's progress, and to do so in ways which share the learning with each other both nationally and internationally.

Boasting signatories from Glasgow to Ghana, delegates found out more about the Accord and the next steps to help ensure the further and higher education sector is using and promoting the UN SDGs to their best advantage.
