BREEAM higher education will end bespoke by creating a 'standard scheme' applicable to most university buildings.

The Association of University Directors of Estates (AUDE) is working with partner organisations and BRE to develop the BREEAM for higher education for piloting in the autumn of 2008 with delivery planned for April 2009.

The project arose from concerns expressed by many AUDE colleagues about the working of BREEAM within the sector and through extensive discussion of possible alternatives.

BRE has proposed the creation of a single template approach for most higher education buildings ('standard scheme' in BRE terminology)
similar to that used in further education. The scheme should allow
some tailoring to specific kinds of building, will apply to both new and refurbished buildings and is planned to include the new features of BREEAM 2008.

It is hoped that BREEAM Higher Education will address current concerns about the cost of bespoke assessments, the timescale for agreeing and developing criteria and the difficulties of comparing one building with another.

The scheme is being developed in collaboration with the HEEPI Green Build project supported by HEFCE, SFC, HEFCW, DELNI and the Carbon Trust.

Input from AUDE colleagues would be welcome, in particular views on the desired content of the scheme and implementation. It is hoped to
coordinate some feedback through regional meetings.

Roger Bond is the main AUDE liaison person for the project. Peter James is the lead contact for HEEPI.
