Behaviour Change Management Programme

In 2011, EAUC-Scotland completed a 6-month Behaviour Change Management Programme, which was funded by the Scottish Funding Council. The pilot incorporated a university and a college, as differences in their make up needed to be recognised.

The pilot was specifically developed to offer support to the signatories of the Universities and Colleges Climate Commitment for Scotland (UCCCfS), but also benefits the wider UK. Reid Kerr College and the University of the West of Scotland, both based in Paisley, finished the pilot scheme in February 2011 and the BCMP Evaluation is now available in the downloads below.

Please see the following links for useful information and resources developed from this pilot that may be of use or inspiration for your institution:

Leadership in Sustainability Training (ESD Consulting)

This leadership element will support staff throughout an institution articulate their role in supporting the development of a sustainable institution and creating action plans that will embed sustainability throughout all activity. It will encourage ambition and the understanding required to challenge unsustainable practices and demonstrate the links between leadership for sustainability and wider effective institution leadership. This module is designed to complement the Green Impact as a top down approach to initiating change.

WorkWare SUSTAIN Benchmarking Toolkit (Alexi Marmot Associates (AMA)

WorkWare SUSTAIN is a toolkit of quantitative and qualitative methodologies to inform behaviour change programmes to reduce energy demand. The objective of the toolkit is to gather evidence on attitudes and behaviours of students, staff, estates and energy managers, which are then collated to develop a change management action plan which identifies:

a. the greatest opportunities for energy saving through behaviour change;
b. the groups and behaviours most amenable to change;
c. recommended change management tools; and
d. benchmarks against which future change can be evaluated.

The questionnaire will form the baseline findings to inform the Campaign Toolkit materials and will be used to compare attitudes and behaviours at the end of the project to form the EAUC’s impact assessment.

Communicating Sustainability Training (Delaney and Hart Ltd)

This training will provide face to face communication skills, particularly in presentation skills as well as influencing skills. It will help to teach staff with a sustainability remit within their institutions, the skills of communicating and ‘selling’ the concept of sustainability to diverse audiences.
The training aims to include: Why communicating sustainability is so important; barriers to communicating sustainability; different types of resistance, overcoming objections, creating compelling arguments, who to target to influence, how to inspire people to take action.

UCCCfS Campaign Toolkit (Action for Sustainability)

The UCCCfS Campaign Toolkit has been developed to run a carbon reduction programme without having to do the pre-programme leg-work.

As part of the toolkit, a number of staff and student engagement tools have been developed (including. posters; powerpoint packs; short communications messages; traffic light sticker templates; room equipment templates; and checklists of electrical equipment). It also includes data management tools (e.g. guidance on how to find, record, use and manage data; spreadsheet for recording data; and a conversion table tool).

Please see the zip file in the downloads below for materials.

Behavioural change management programme Evaluation

Following the successful completion of this pilot programme, the lists of recommendations was made. The recommendations show that while this Programme has shown benefits, more development is required before this programme is to be rolled out as a full UK EAUC member service.

Below are the reports produced throughout the pilot stage. Alexi Marmot Associates, AMA, produced three reports; a change management programme report for each institution following the attitudes survey and an additional findings report for the EAUC.

An Independent Evaluation was undertaken by Osbert Lancaster for the effectiveness of the modules that made up the Programme. Please note that this is not an impact assessment evaluation, as it is too early in the process to undertake this kind of evaluation. An impact assessment will be undertaken towards the end of the academic year (2010/11) to ensure institutions have sufficient time to implement change through the findings.
