2nd Call for Papers

This is the second call for papers, for the World Symposium on Sustainability at Universities (WSSD-U-2014),which will be held in Manchester, UK  on 3-5 September 2014. This will follow-up a highly successful event held in Rio de Janeiro last year, parallel to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20).

From 44 submitted abstracts to the first call, 19 have been accepted to date.
Some of the titles of the presentations and papers now being prepared include:

* Sustainable Development at Universities in the Sultanate of Oman: The Interesting Case of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU)
* Integrating a triple bottom-line approach into the management system: A framework for higher education and businesses alike
* Monitoring and Changing the Sustainability Culture at the University of Michigan
* Making sustainability part of every student’s curriculum
* The relevance of transdisciplinary teaching and learning for the successful,integration of sustainability issues into higher education development
* The processes of integrating sustainability in Higher Education curricula: a theoretical-practical experience regarding key competences and their
cross-curricular incorporation into degree courses
* The role of Geography in multi-inter-trans-disciplinary study programmes for environmental sustainability
* The Impact of Students’ Sustainable Values, Attitudes and Behaviour on their Wellbeing
* Sustainable university for regional development: employers’ and social partners’ attitudes
* Education for Sustainable Development in Higher Education:  Reviewing Needs

and many more!

WSSD-U-2014 seeks contributions from suitably qualified academics, research groups and students working in the field of sustainable development as a whole,
and concerned with research on sustainability, on curriculum greening and campus activities, in particular.

This second Call is also meant to engage colleagues undertaking practical initiatives and projects aimed at promoting sustainable development at universities, or where universities transfer information and know-how to developing countries. WSSD-U-2014 will also offer a good platform for those undertaking local, national and international projects, where it can be showcased how higher education institutions are putting the principles of  sustainable development into practice.

WSSD-U-2014 will be an international and high impact event in 2014, happening just a few weeks before the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD) comes to a close. An output of WSSD-U-2014  will be the peer reviewed book “Transformative  approaches to sustainable development at universities: working across disciplines” will be published, with all accepted papers. This will be a further volume of the award-winning book series “Environmental Education, Communication and Sustainability” (Peter Lang Scientific Publishers), which since its creation in 1998 has become the world´s prime book series on education and communication on sustainable development. Interested people and organisations should submit a 200 word abstract as soon as possible, but no later than 30th January 2014.
